🏫 University Club might close for good

Good morning, Madison! Good morning, Madison! It has been an earth-shaking week in politics, obviously. For the Friday news roundup, we invited Kristin Brey of “As Goes Wisconsin” and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to explain what happened, and what’s next. Give it a listen! 🎧

What's CITY Talking About?

📚 Library Hours Stay Put After Referendum Approval
- Bookworms will rejoice that voters’ passage of the city’s $22 million operating budget referendum Tuesday means that Madison libraries won’t reduce hours or services next year.
- Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway mentioned library hours and staffing as one of the items on the chopping block if the referendum didn’t pass.
- Dig deeper: The referendum’s passage also brings new hope for Madison’s proposed 10th library, the Imagination Center at Reindahl park. On the City Cast Madison podcast, District 17 Ald. Sabrina Madison talked about the importance of the project. [WMTV, 🎧City Cast Madison]
🏫 UW’s University Club Closed For ‘Foreseeable Future’
- UW-Madison’s historic University Club’s future is uncertain as officials evaluate its long-term future. The Wisconsin Union closed the building over the summer after its cafe only drew in one-third of expected revenue, union officials said.
- The Tudor-style building on Library Mall served as the home of the private University Club since 1907, but closed in 2020 after the social club went bankrupt. Wisconsin Union management took over the facility and reopened it in 2023 as a cafe and study space. [Isthmus]
🎧 New Podcast Deep Dives Into Campus Police History
- “Reorientation” is a new podcast that looks at the history of law enforcement on the UW-Madison campus. The series explores tensions between campus police and students, including the police response to the pro-Palestinian protests this spring and the purges of gay male students in the 1960s.
- The podcast is produced by the Rebecca M. Blank Center For Campus History. The first episode is out now, and all six episodes of “Reorientation” will be released Nov. 11 on Spotify and other podcatchers. [Cap Times, UW-Madison]

Friday Floof

A couple of weeks ago the Friday Floof met Willow, and now let’s meet her housemate, Cedar!
Cedar is the best mouser ever – in theory. She’s an indoor cat, so she only gets to play with toy mice. But if an actual mouse ever darkened her door? Beware!

📰 Extra! Extra! After this week, we all deserve to curl up with a pint of ice cream. Just make sure it’s not Orange Custard Chocolate Chip or Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream from Babcock Dairy. Babcock recalled both flavors this week because some of the peanut butter ice cream containers were mistakenly filled with orange custard. That means the containers have incorrect allergen labels, posing a health risk to some. 🍨
