🎒 No, you can’t name your school ‘Big Chungus’

November 11, 2024 · —Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! As the Asian lady beetles crowding a sunny bedroom window recently reminded me, there are a lot of bugs crawling around this fall! On the City Cast Madison podcast today, we talked to an expert about why there are so many stink bugs, box elders, and other insects around right now, and what to do about them. 🐞

đŸ„ UW Health To Require Masking in Some Areas

  • With respiratory virus season here, UW Health will begin to require masking in some areas starting today to protect patients and staff.
  • From November through March, airborne viruses like COVID-19, RSV, and the flu spread at higher levels. Masking will be optional but highly recommended in other areas of UW Health facilities, and the requirements will be lifted in mid-March. [Channel 3000]

đŸ—łïž Monona Referendum Passes by Just 32 Votes

  • The next time somebody tries to claim one vote doesn’t matter, point them to the election results for last week’s Monona referendum. The $3 million operating fund referendum passed by just 32 votes, with 96% of voters showing up at the polls.
  • City officials said the approval means the city of Monona won’t have to cut back on essential services, such as brush collection and library hours, to make up its budget shortfall.
  • Related: Madison voters also passed a multi-million dollar budgetary referendum on Election Day. Here’s what you need to know about it. [WKOW, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

🎒 No, You Can’t Call Your School ‘Schooly McSchoolFace’

  • A community panel has narrowed down the list of options to rename Southside Elementary School, and for better or worse, some of the more creative ideas aren’t among the finalists.
  • Residents contributed 175 suggestions for the school on East Badger Road, but some, including “Schooly McSchoolface” and “Big Chungus Elementary,” were eliminated because they didn’t meet the naming criteria.
  • Ideas that made the list included naming the school after former Wisconsin Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson and community leader Lori Mann Carey. [Cap Times]
