❄️ Madison gets extra strength road salt for winter

November 22, 2024 · —Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! Goodman Community Center volunteers are prepping 4,000 Thanksgiving baskets tonight to send to Dane County families this winter, and they’ve put out one last urgent call for donations. Big props to everyone who has already stepped up to help.

If you want to help, there's still time to drop off donations! 🦃

What's CITY Talking About?

📰 City Council Censure and Gothard Lawsuit

  • We had a LOT to talk about on this week’s Friday news roundup on the City Cast Madison podcast.
  • First off, host Bianca Martin talked to Madison Ald. MGR Govindarajan about the growing support for a resolution to censure Ald. Charles Myadze over multiple sexual harassment and assault allegations.
  • Then, we talk about a new lawsuit alleging St. Paul Schools misused COVID-19 funds while current Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Joe Gothard was in charge. Then we talk about new restaurants and the start of gun hunting season this weekend. Give it a listen! [ 🎧 City Cast Madison, Cap Times, Channel 3000]

☃️ Madison Gets Salty To Prep For Winter

  • The snow on the ground Thursday was irrefutable proof that winter is coming, and Madison streets will be ready with a new kind of road salt.
  • Regular road salt is sodium chloride, but the new salt is magnesium chloride which works in much colder temperatures. The new salt was purchased following January’s massive snowfall and frigid temperatures.
  • The new magnesium chloride salt is more expensive and more corrosive than regular salt, so it will only be used in extreme weather events. [WMTV, Cap Times]

🦃 Madison Students Make Thanksgiving Baskets

  • A culinary class at Madison East High School is making Thanksgiving baskets for their peers using items from the school’s food pantry.
  • The Food 4 U Pantry is a partnership between Second Harvest Foodbank and the school. The students are making items such as fresh bread in class and compiling them with turkeys and other side dishes to make Thanksgiving baskets for MMSD families. [WMTV]

This week’s Friday Floof is Dudlee! Dudlee is a rescue kitty who likes rolls in the grass and is very vocal about wanting attention. But with a face like that, who wouldn’t want to stare at him all day?

Do you have a floof you want to see featured in the newsletter?

What To Do

Friday, Nov. 22

📰 Extra! Extra! As the temperature has been dropping, Madison bus riders using the new BRT stations may have noticed something missing – windows at the rear. Metro officials say the glass for the stations has been ordered and will be installed soon. Good thing that buttons to turn on the heaters were installed last week 🚌
