🚨 How UW got ‘real cops’ on campus

November 27, 2024 · —Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! Just a heads-up that we’ll be off Thursday and Friday to celebrate Thanksgiving. So there won’t be new Madison Minutes newsletters in your inbox or City Cast Madison episodes in your podcast feeds. We’ll all be back on Monday. Have a great holiday! 🙏

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ Embattled Alder Vows To Finish Term

  • District 18 Ald. Charles Myadze intends to finish his term on the Madison City Council, as a majority of his fellow alders support a resolution to censure him.
  • A city-funded outside investigation into multiple sexual harassment and assault complaints against Myadze concluded that the accusations were credible, but that Myadze did not violate the law or city rules. Myadze denies the accusations and said he intends to finish his term on the council.
  • Stay tuned: City Cast Madison recently interviewed Ald. Juliana Bennett, one of the women accusing Myadze of misconduct. That show will air following the Thanksgiving break, so be sure you’re subscribed to City Cast Madison wherever you listen to podcasts. [Channel 3000]

⛪ Community Mourns Rev. Richard Jones Sr.

  • The Madison community is mourning a leader who served for almost a decade as senior pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the city’s largest Black church. Rev. Richard Jones Sr. died Nov. 16 at 61.
  • Jones also served as a public defender handling major crimes throughout the state. He was involved in the community in many ways, and is being remembered for his compassion and commitment.
  • “Rev. Jones was not only a spiritual leader but a pillar of strength for many,” said Mt. Zion’s current senior pastor, Rev. Marcus Allen. Jones’ funeral will be held Saturday at High Point Church. [Madison365]

🚨 New Podcast Looks At ‘Real Cops’ on Campus

  • On the City Cast Madison podcast today, Host Bianca Martin talks to Kacie Lucchini Butcher, one of the hosts of a new podcast series that looks at the past and present of campus police at UW-Madison.
  • “Reorientation” is a six-episode narrative podcast from the Center for Campus History. Episodes look at how universities came to have deputized law enforcement on campus and how UW-Madison police handled incidents over the years, including the recent anti-war encampments. Where Is It?

Did you know where this pretty and very touchable yarn mural is located? (Rob Thomas/Madison Minutes)

This mural, designed by artist Kiersten Darling, is located at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg!

🎉 Congratulations to Sam W. for being the first person to guess right!

Which store has this neon sign in its window? (Rob Thomas/Madison Minutes)

Do you know where this sign is located? A few clues:

  • It's in the window of a store on Madison's west side
  • That store has been open since 2013
  • It's no mystery what sort of books this store specializes in!

If you have a photo of a Madison landmark or oddity that you think would make a good Where Is It? Send it our way! We’ll credit you if we use your photo in a future newsletter.

📰 Extra! Extra! Many Madisonians remember where they were on Nov. 24, 2013, when Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine tweeted a photo of the Wisconsin Capitol and exclaimed “Cool building!” Now, former Madison musician Chris Joutras has designed a new “Cool Building” T-shirt, and Tone Madison is giving a couple away as part of its fundraising drive 👕
