What's CITY Talking About?

🚙 Slow It Down, 20 Is Plenty

  • Madison’s Common Council approved a change to residential street speed limits, reducing speeds to 20 miles per hour as part of their Vision Zero program.
  • In 2021, the city piloted the initiative by limiting the speed limit in the Tenney-Lapham and Theresa-Hammersley neighborhoods. This winter, the city will start updating and installing about 2,000 speed limit signs throughout Madison, which will be completed early next year.
  • Dig deeper: Research has shown that lower speed limits mean safer streets and more liveable neighborhoods. That sounds nice. [City of Madison, Madison Minutes]

🇵🇸 Pro-Palestinian Protestors Arrested at UW

  • Nineteen people were arrested and released last Thursday after protesters disrupted a Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents meeting on the UW-Madison campus.
  • About 50 protestors were there from Students for Justice in Palestine at UW-Madison, UW-Milkwake Poplar Univesity for Palestine, and other Pro-Palestinian groups at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee.
  • UW-Madison police did not issue any citations but said there is still a possibility for citations after investigations are completed. [Channel3000, UWPD]

🧑‍🏫 Post Act 10, Teachers Look To Contract Changes

  • The teachers’ union, Madison Teachers Inc., requested to renegotiate parts of their contract with the district after Act 10 was overruled last week.
  • Now that collective bargaining is once again available for teachers, the union is asking the district for contracts to include conditions of employment. [Channel3000]

18 Natural Wonders in Wisconsin That Are Especially Breathtaking in Winter

Wisconsin offers stunning natural wonders that transform beautifully during winter, providing unique and picturesque landscapes.

It's easy to want to cuddle under a blanket or in front of a fire during our long, cold winters and dream of the days when you can get back outside. But there's so much natural beauty in Wisconsin that's only enhanced by the cold weather and snow it brings. The beauty isn't necessarily better - just different. And seeing all some of the best natural wonders in Wisconsin during winter just helps you appreciate how lush they can be in the summer.

1. Horicon National Wildlife Refuge - Horicon

A winter stopover for Canada geese and other migratory birds, the marsh should be on your list just to view some of the great winter wildlife. Fresh snow is perfect for seeing new tracks.

2. Wequiock Falls - Green Bay

In the summer the waterfall can be just a slow trickle at times, but in the winter the water freezes and builds up to make a gorgeous and ever-changing view. Plus, it's easy to access and near parking and picnic areas. Wequiock Falls is one of the most stunning Wisconsin natural wonders.

3. Ellison Bay - Door County

This little inlet off Green Bay forms ice fairly early in the winter and it looks like cubes in your drink. The views from what feels like the edge of the world don't hurt, either.Image: Screenshot 2024-12-06 at 1.01.24 PM.pngCave Point Icy Shores dramatic coastline (Dave Jonassen / Getty Images)

4. Door County

All of Door County transforms in the winter. The warm water meets cool air and forms sea smoke, the water starts to freeze and the trees hold the snow. It feels a little otherworldly and worth the trip.

5. Grandad Bluff - La Crosse

Snow clings to the limestone bluffs and trees, ice forms on the Mississippi River and you get to look out over it all.
