What's CITY Talking About?

🏢 Should All State Workers Go Back to the Office?

  • Gov. Tony Evers won’t sign a state budget that requires state workers to fully return to the office, setting up a showdown with GOP legislators.
  • Republicans, including State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, have floated proposals that would require government workers to return to the office. Vos said remote workers are less productive.
  • Evers pushed back, saying an in-office requirement would discriminate against workers who don’t live near Madison or Milwaukee. [WPR]

🚨 Family of Man Killed By Police Sees Body Cam Footage

  • The family of Kevin Price, who died after being shot three times in the chest by Fitchburg police officers, has privately reviewed body camera footage from the incident.
  • On Aug. 12, Price called 911, saying someone was trying to “break his neck.” When police arrived at Price’s apartment, he was holding a knife, and a police officer shot him three times.
  • While the footage of the incident has not been made public while the shooting is being investigated, the family called the footage “sad and disturbing,” and made clear Price “posed zero threat to anyone.”
  • Dig deeper: On the City Cast Madison podcast, Tone Madison publisher Scott Gordon talked with executive producer Hayley Sperling about proposed legislation requiring those requesting public records like body camera footage to pay the cost of redactions. [WMTV, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

🍻 Why Do Pull-Tabs Have Such Pull in Wisconsin Bars?

This sign is located at Tex Tubb’s Taco Palace on Atwood Ave.!

🥳 Congrats to Tammy B. (not U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin) for being the first person to guess correctly!

Do you know where this mural is located? A few clues:

  • It is located on the wall of a business that has been in the same spot since 1991.
  • It’s located on Madison’s west side.
  • The fact that the mural is a song lyric is a big clue.

What To Do

Wednesday, Dec. 11

📰 Extra! Extra! Grease is the word, but it’s not what city officials want Madisonians to be pouring down their sinks. City workers had to clean up a sanitary sewer overflow on Madison’s east side last week caused by large amounts of grease solidifying in the sewer. So no fats, oil, grease, or other food waste down the drain, ok? Yuck! 🤮
