✈️ Will Noise Mitigation Funds Fly Past F-35 Neighbors?

  • The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs is seeking an $18 million federal grant to help soundproof 162 Madison homes against the noise from F-35 fighter jets stationed at Truax Field. But that would leave over 1,000 homes also affected without noise mitigation.
  • The soundproofing would take three years to install and cost $127,000 per home. State officials say they would seek additional funding to help other homes, but that money is “not guaranteed.” [Cap Times]

🥼 UW-Madison Researchers Investigate ‘Havana Syndrome’

  • Have you heard of “Havana Syndrome”? In 2016, U.S. Embassy workers in Cuba reported experiencing concussion-like symptoms. The mysterious ailment began affecting U.S. personnel in other countries, including Russia and China.
  • Now, a multi-discipline research hub in Madison called PANTHER is investigating how pulsed microwaves might injure the brain, one plausible explanation for the “anomalous health incident.“ PANTHER got a $10 million grant from the U.S. Office of Naval Research for the work. Did you guess where this mural is located?

This mural is located on the wall of Strictly Discs on Monroe Street!

🎉 Congratulations to Walt N. for being the first person to guess correctly! And a special shout-out to Emily B., who also guessed right but also had a bit of an advantage – she helped paint the mural!

Can you guess where this is? A few clues:

  • It’s on the west side of Madison, not far from last week’s mural.
  • It's in a parking lot that probably doesn't see much traffic in the winter, but "I scream, you scream, we all scream" for what the business sells in the summer!
  • The artist is a recent City Cast Madison guest!

What To Do

Wednesday, Dec. 18

📰 Extra! Extra! The up-and-down temperature fluctuations this fall have led to dangerous conditions for ice fishers and others venturing out on frozen lakes and ponds. So even though it may be cold for a few days, that ice may not be as solid as it looks. Be careful! 🧊
