🥟 Little Palace closing…for now

February 21, 2025 · —Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! It’s the end of a chapter, but not the end, for Little Palace. The Asian restaurant will have its final service at its current location at 225 King St. on Feb. 25. The owners say they’re focused on reopening Ha Long Bay on Willy Street, and then will reopen Little Palace in a new location soon after 🥟

What's CITY Talking About?

🏗️ Will UW Finally Demolish Mosse Humanities Building?

  • They say adverse conditions can inspire great art, but students and staff in the UW-Madison Mosse Humanities Buildings say things have gone way too far. UW officials have been trying to replace the decrepit 1960s-era building piecemeal for a decade, and now propose to tear the whole thing down.
  • In its capital budget submitted to Gov. Tony Evers, the university proposes $292.5 million to build or renovate two new homes for its art and music departments, and then raze Mosse to the ground by 2030. [🔒 WSJ]

🐦 New School Mascot Designs Draw Some Boo-Birds

  • Some students, staff, and alumni of Madison high schools aren’t cheering the proposed redesigns of their school mascots and logos. School officials said the new designs would be more modern and reflect the newly-renovated schools.
  • But in a survey, respondents overwhelmingly said that the new designs lack the spirit and tradition of the originals, and urged that either the old logos be used or that the new ones were more like the originals. The designer of the Regents mascot currently used by Madison West High School even said the new versions “screamed clip-art.”

😖 Black Seniors Say City-Funded Agency Is Snubbing Them

  • Black senior citizens in Madison say that NewBridge, a city-funded nonprofit that provides senior programming and services, is slighting them compared to other groups.
  • They say NewBridge has excluded them from case management and outreach efforts and charging them fees for routine services. They also said other seniors are getting significantly more attention, noting that NewBridge sponsored 40 events for Hispanic Heritage Month and only five for Black History Month.
  • 🎧 Dig deeper: The City Cast Madison team talks about the seniors’ concerns on the Friday news roundup. They also recount this week’s primary election results and chat about the priorities of Gov. Tony Evers’ proposed budget. Listen in! [Cap Times, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

Friday Floof

You can’t fool us, Scarlett Marie Goodbaby. We can tell which poodle is the real one and which is the fake! (Photo by Lyn W.)

Meet Scarlett Marie Goodbaby! The dog with the incredible name is a five-year-old, one-eyed Standard Poodle who was rescued by her humans when she was one year old. She is calm, quiet, and curious, likes people and cats, and likes just sitting or lying wherever her humans are, watching and waiting. When she’s feeling more active, she loves playing fetch, and going out to dinner wherever she’s welcome to dine.

What To Do

Friday, Feb. 21

📰 Extra! Extra! In Wednesday’s newsletter, I mistakenly implied that the only statewide race on the April 1 ballot was the state superintendent of schools race. Of course, there’s also a Wisconsin Supreme Court race and a constitutional amendment to require photo ID 🗳️
