February 26, 2025 · — Natalia Aldana
Hiya! This is City Cast editor Natalia Aldana filling in for Rob today.
💡 Have you ever stopped and noticed the signs around Madison? From the huge Orpheum marquee on State Street, the classic restored Badger Liquor sign a block away, and hundreds more, one person is behind all of it. On this City Cast Madison episode, host Bianca Martin speaks to Dan Yoder, the man behind Madison’s iconic signs.

What's CITY Talking About?
🐕 Dog Day Care Owner Runs for City Council
- The path to City Council has been paved for Ryan Koglin after current District 15 Ald. Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford suspended her reelection campaign last month.
- Koglin, who is the owner of the Dirty Paws Hiking dog day care as well as the president of an east side neighborhood association, received an endorsement from Martinez-Rutherford on social media. [Cap Times]
🏫 UW-Madison Still Working on Conservative Professorship
- A university spokesperson says they continue to “actively work” on establishing an endowment for a professorship on conservative politics or thought, after Rep. Dave Murphy, R-Greensville alleged UW-Madison has “dragged their feet” on the agreement.
- This agreement was made in December 2023 between the Universities of Wisconsin president and Assembly Speaker Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester.
- At the state budget address last week, Murphy shot back at a proposed $856 million for the UW system because he said UW-Madison had neglected to meet the deal.
- While the original provision didn’t specify a timeframe, UW-Madison says they agreed to fundraise for the position within two years of the December 2023 deal. [🔒Wisconsin State Journal]
❤️ Southside Elementary Has a New Name
- Madison’s Southside Elementary School will now be named after Lori Mann Carey, who grew up on the south side and was an advocate for education and students of color.
- Mann Carey founded the Mission 4.0 after-school program that offered tutoring for West High School’s Black students. She also helped establish the Mann Scholars program for students of color. Mann Carey passed away five years ago.
- An 11-member committee sorted through recommendations and options over seven months. The committee recommended four finalists, and the Madison School Board finalized the name change on Monday. [Cap Times]

Do you know where this sculpture is located? A few clues:
- It’s located on Madison’s east side
- The sculpture is called “Tree Limb Faces” by beloved Madison folk artist Sid Boyum.
- If the faces they could see, they could see a beloved music venue, a beloved retro diner and a beloved bar & grill nearby.
