⚖️ Judge protects second UW student from deportation

April 25, 2025 · — Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! Happy Friday! We’re halfway through our spring membership campaign, and I’ll give it to you straight. We need 10 new members to join today to keep us on track toward our goal. As we head into the weekend, I want to share why becoming a City Cast Madison Neighbor matters.

When you join, you’re not just getting perks like invites to members-only events, and a custom City Cast Madison mug — though we’re excited to share those with you! You’re also supporting the kind of local journalism that helps build a better Madison.

This week alone, we told you about the shaky future for Wisconsin Humanities, gave you a list of newly-opened Madison restaurants to help plan your next dining adventure, and even told you about how birdwatching can make you a happier person. These are the sorts of stories we love to share with you. They connect us, inform us, and inspire us to engage more deeply with our city and each other.

I hope you’ll consider supporting us by and join City Cast Madison Neighbors today.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚧 Everybody’s Going To Be Downtown Saturday

  • Between the Mifflin Street Block Party, Crazylegs Classic, and Dane County Farmers Market, expect downtown Madison to be packed with your neighbors this Saturday.
  • Many downtown streets, including West Gilman, Langdon, Old University Avenue and Walnut Street, will be closed from about 9:50 a.m. till noon for Crazylegs, depending on when runners have completed each section of the course. Some bus routes will also be detoured.
  • Meanwhile, around 10,000 revelers are expected to take part in the Mifflin Street Block Party, and city officials said they’ve been preparing for months. For better or worse, the party’s been a Madison tradition for decades.
  • 🎧 Dig deeper: City Cast Madison executive producer Hayley Sperling and producer Jade Iseri-Ramos dish on the hectic weekend on the Friday news roundup on the podcast. They also talk about UW-Madison pushback against President Donald Trump, and one UW prof’s role in investigating a lost painting by Vincent Van Gogh. Listen in! 🏗️ New History Center Breaks Ground on Capitol Square

  • An organization that digs into the past is garnering excitement for its future as the Wisconsin Historical Society broke ground Wednesday on a new History Center downtown.
  • The new five-story building is located on the site of the old Wisconsin Historical Museum, with over 100,000 square feet devoted to galleries, events, and learning spaces, including immersive exhibits. It is scheduled to open in fall 2027. [News 3]

⚖️ Should a Student Get Deported Over a Speeding Ticket?

  • A judge has protected a second UW-Madison international student who was scheduled to be deported just weeks before graduation. U.S. District Judge William Conley ruled that the Trump administration wrongly revoked the F-1 visa of Yue “Alison” Yang.
  • Yang was scheduled for deportation apparently because of a speeding ticket she received in February. Conley said that decision was an “abuse of discretion,” and that deporting her before she graduated next month would have cost Yang $132,900 in tuition with no degree. [ 🔒 WSJ]
