📚 Wisconsin Humanities stays alive – for now
May 2, 2025 · — Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! Today is the last day of our spring membership campaign, and I’m feeling energized and optimistic that we can hit our goal of 75 City Cast Madison Neighbors! We just need 15 more of you to join us and we’ll make it! 📣
On Wednesday night, we hosted our first Neighbor-exclusive happy hour at the Muskellounge, just one of the many ways we want to say thank you to the folks who support us. Meeting everyone really made me feel connected to the people who read and support what we do here. In a time of uncertainty in the world in general and in local journalism in particular, it’s a real shot in the arm to know you’re out there reading this.

If you feel that same connection toward our work, and our shared mission to celebrate Madison and make it a better place to live, now is the time to become a City Cast Madison Neighbor.

What's CITY Talking About?
📚 Wisconsin Humanities Stays Alive With Emergency Funding
- A Wisconsin nonprofit that said it would probably close after its federal funding was abruptly cancelled now has new life thanks to an emergency private grant.
- Wisconsin Humanities, which supports programs at libraries and museums throughout the state, was preparing to lay off its entire staff and close after the National Endowment for the Humanities suddenly canceled its operating grant. But the Mellon Foundation donated $15 million for such organizations across the country, including $255,000 for Wisconsin Humanities.
- The funding will give the nonprofit “crucial breathing room,” officials said, keeping it alive in the hopes of getting federal funding in the next budget cycle. 🚲 Streets Closed For Collegiate Cycling Championships
- Expect multiple street closures in the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood this weekend as the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships roll through town.
- Starting at 8 p.m. May 3, the 800 and 900 blocks of East Mifflin Street will be closed to set up the start/finish line. Starting at 5 a.m. on May 4, portions of East Mifflin, East Dayton, North Livingston, and North Paterson streets will be closed for the race route. All roads will reopen by 6 p.m. [City of Madison, USA Cycling]
🪧 Immigant Rights Protest March Set For Friday
- Wisconsin immigrant rights organization Voces de la Frontera has scheduled a march and rally Friday afternoon in Madison. Protesters will gather at Brittingham Park at 3 p.m. and march to the Capitol at 4 p.m. for a rally in the rotunda.
- The event is part of a national day of protest in 32 states in support of immigrant rights.
- Dig deeper: On the City Cast Madison podcast today, host Bianca Martin, executive producer Hayley Sperling, and I talk about the controversy over UW-Madison students having their visas revoked and reinstated. We also talk about the unexpectedly optimistic future of a second bus rapid transit line, a warm and fuzzy story involving a Madison hero, and make one final pitch for you to join City Cast Madison Neighbors!
