🚨 Passenger punches Metro Transit driver
May 15, 2025 · — Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! We’re big fans of Ha Long Bay here at City Cast Madison, and so thrilled that the Vietnamese restaurant on Willy Street has entered a new era and officially announced its soft re-opening. On the City Cast Madison podcast today, owners Jacqueline and Stephanie Le, nieces of founder Jean Tran, talk to host Bianca Martin about updating the restaurant while keeping its traditions alive 🍜

What's CITY Talking About?

🏢 Madison Civil Rights Head Accused of Discrimination
- The city is hiring an outside investigator to look into allegations of discrimination by the director of the Madison Department of Civil Rights. Nearly a dozen current and former staff are accusing Norman Davis of discriminating against women and people with disabilities.
- The complaint details a dozen examples since 2018 where employees say Davis unreasonably questioned staff members’ disabilities, harassed women employees and staff with disabilities, and failed to support the professional development of women employees.
- Davis told the Cap Times that he was confident that the investigation would clear him of wrongdoing. [Cap Times]
🦞 Rue Bourre Owner Closing Cajun Restaurant
- Owner Bekah Nethken-Ulrich is closing Rue Bourre, her Cajun restaurant on Cottage Grove Road this week and selling off her kitchen equipment.
- In a post on social media, Nethken-Ulrich said she had to prioritize financial, health, and safety concerns. She said the restaurant will be open until Friday, selling only frozen foods, and she is accepting cash for restaurant equipment and inventory.
- Nethken-Ulrich began selling Cajun food out of a market stand at the Northside Farmers Market in 2020 and opened her brick-and-mortar location in 2023. [Rue Bourre, Cap Times]
🚨 Passenger Arrested After Allegedly Punching Bus Driver
- A 21-year-old passenger was arrested after an attack on a Metro Transit driver Monday morning.
- Madison police say the suspect entered the bus through the rear and refused to pay, then became angry when the driver confronted him for hitting a safety partition. The suspect faces charges of battery to a public transit operator, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and bail jumping.
- Metro Transit improved security issues for its drivers earlier this year after a passenger attacked a bus driver in February, causing the bus to crash into Asian House restaurant. [WMTV]
