✈️ F-35 night flights return this week
May 20, 2025 · – Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! One silver lining to the temperature dropping this week is that you probably won’t be hanging out outside much in the evening. Which means you won’t be as bothered by the F-35 nighttime training flights the 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard are conducting until 11 p.m. each night. Gotta look for the bright sides everywhere, right? ✈️

What's CITY Talking About?

🛶 Who Threw Their Clothes Into the Yahara River?
- County workers dredging the Yahara River have found bicycles, scrap metal, and a bag of clothes that were apparently thrown into the east side river. “There are a lot of those things that have just been thrown in the water,” project head John Riemer said.
- The Yahara River Sediment Removal Project is a years-long project aimed at improving water flow and reducing the risk of flooding at key stretches of the river. The project began in 2019 following massive flooding in Madison during the summer of 2018. This year’s project is focusing on a stretch between Lower Mud Lake and Lake Kegonsa. 🛟 Lake Rescue Team Searches for Missing Kayaker
- Rescuers continued to search Lake Monona on Monday for a boater who went missing when a sailboat overturned in the middle of the lake Friday night.
- The vessel containing four people overturned at about 8 p.m. One person made it to shore, and guided the Madison Fire Department’s Lake Rescue Team to where the victims were last seen and heard, where they found two more people in the water. Authorities said the fourth missing person was not wearing a life jacket. [Madison Fire Department]
🏠 Is Madison’s Hot Housing Market Finally Cooling Off?
- The value of the average single-family home in Madison grew by the smallest amount in five years, according to city officials. Property values rose 5.2% in 2025. Thats compared to a 7.8% increase last year, and double-digit increases in 2022 and 2023 due to demand.
- Those successive hikes mean that the average single-family home in Madison is valued at $481,000, up from $315,000 in 2020. The overall assessed real estate value went up by 9.1%, driven by over $1 billion in new construction. [ 🔒 WSJ]

Take Me Home Tuesday

Meet Leia! She’s a 10-year-old German Shepherd mix who adores children – she even served as a “dog nanny” to a child in her previous home. While she’s a senior, she has lots of energy and likes to run around and play. She’s also very smart and knows how to sit, stay, shake, lie down, and come. She’s even figured out how to open a door with a lever handle, “Jurassic Park” raptor-style! Leia has lived with other dogs and has done well after slow introductions, but prefers a home without small critters where she can enjoy hanging out with her new family.
