🤓 Are you smarter than a Madison third grader?

June 9, 2025 · — Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! How are you spending your summer vacay? On Saturday, UW-Madison Ph.D. student Taylan Stulting started a 2,800-mile ocean race from California to Kauai. The fact that “World’s Toughest Race – Pacific” is happening during Pride Month is appropriate, as Stutling is the first transgender rower to take part in the race 🚣

🧑‍⚕️ Nurses Go from Picket Line To Signing Dotted Lines

  • Nurses at UnityPoint Health-Meriter were celebrating last week after they signed a historic contract with the hospital. But what were they fighting for, and in the end, what did they get?
  • The contract included 8% raises for all nurses over the next two years, with an additional 2% in step increases. While it did not set staff-to-patient ratios as the union had hoped, nurses will have a voice in increased safety measures and security procedures going forward.
  • 🎧 Dig deeper: On the City Cast Madison podcast today, executive producer Hayley Sperling talked to Pat Raes, the head of SEIU Wisconsin and a Meriter nurse herself, about the importance of these wins. [Cap Times, 🎧City Cast Madison]

🏗️ Ruling Could Delay Controversial Apartment Complex

  • A Dane County judge ruled that the Madison City Council used “immaterial” criteria when voting to rezone two west side properties on Old Sauk Road to make way for a 144-unit apartment complex.
  • Nearby residents have organized against the Stone House Development plan, saying it would increase traffic and density in a neighborhood full of single-family homes. Dane County Judge Rhonda Lanford ruled last week that council members failed to consider factors required by the city’s comprehensive plan.
  • In order for the project to move forward, the council would again need to rezone the property in accordance with the plan. Lanford has scheduled a June 9 hearing on a temporary injunction to stop any permits being issued on the project. [Isthmus]
