📚 Paul’s Bookstore lives on in man’s basement
July 18, 2025 · — Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! Wisconsin has a state bird (the robin), a state tree (the sugar maple) and even a state fish (the muskie, of course). So why not a state butterfly? Seventeen Wisconsin legislators are pushing to make the monarch the official state butterfly. They’re not just pretty – butterflies play an important role in pollination, and monarchs have been experiencing a sharp decline lately 🦋

What's CITY Talking About?

🎸 Red And White UW Will Be All Yellow For Coldplay
- Hotels, businesses, and motorists are bracing themselves as one of the biggest pop-rock bands in the world, Coldplay, comes to Camp Randall on Saturday night. It’s the second big concert of the summer at the stadium, following country star Morgan Wallen’s two shows in June, breaking a decades-long drought of live music.
- Monroe Street between Regent Street and Randall Avenue will be closed between 8 a.m. July 19 and 3 a.m. July 20. Regent Street between Spooner Street and Randall Avenue will be closed between 11 p.m. and midnight July 19 to make sure pedestrians leaving the concert are safe.
- 🎧 If you’re not sure what happened this week, the City Cast Madison team will try to “fix you” with the Friday news roundup. We talk about the latest delay in the Madison Public Market, the new restrictions at Goodman Pool, and what dishes to order for Madison Restaurant Week. 🇮🇹 Italian Workmen’s Club Added to Registry of Historic Places
- The 103-year-old Italian Workmen’s Club on Regent Street was added to the National Registry of Historic Places this week.
- The building was built by hand by members of the club in 1922, and remains committed to celebrating the traditions and culture of Italians and Italian Americans. The club offers Italian language classes, and is home to the Greenbush Bar.
- Dig deeper: The Greenbush neighborhood has seen a big revival in recent years. Spots like Leopold’s, Fabiola’s, and the Greenbush Bar have become new staples of the area. 📚 Paul’s Bookstore (Or At Least 2,000 Of its Books) Lives On
- A frequent customer of the now-closed Paul’s Bookstore on State Street has recreated a piece of the iconic shop in his basement.
- August McGinnity-Wake bought 2,000 books from the store and some shelves, and has used it to create his own bookstore, Augie’s Books, in the basement of his home on Farwell Street. The books are all fiction and literary criticism, and McGinnity-Wake has sold about 100 of those books online so far. [Channel 3000, Augie’s Books]
