🔍 Why Was a City Civil Rights Official Allowed To Retire?

  • As an outside investigation continues into allegations that the head of Madison’s Department of Civil Rights discriminated against employees, personnel records show that another leader in the department under investigation was allowed to retire.
  • Records show Byron Bishop, the former Equal Opportunities Division manager, violated city administrative policies and had three years of disciplinary actions against him for performance issues. But administrative officials allowed Bishop to resign and retire because of his nearly decade-long tenure with the city.
  • Meanwhile, department director Norman Davis is being investigated for allegedly discriminating against and harassing female employees and employees with disabilities.

🚨 Police Plan To Remove Homeless on Downtown Streets

  • Madison police plan to remove homeless people encamped on the streets downtown this week after the number of related calls for service on State Street doubled in August.
  • Police said they reached out to community groups last week notifying them of the impending sweep, in the hopes of connecting people with services beforehand. But those groups said there aren’t enough services in the city to address its rising unhoused population.
  • Kipp Hartman, police captain for the Central District, told the Wisconsin State Journal that residents and business owners have been reporting fights and other disturbances, as well as larger encampments being built. [ 🔒 WSJ]

Take Me Home Tuesday

While Dane County Humane Society’s Clear the Shelter event was a success, the shelter still has plenty of great animals looking for a home. Like Zamu! (Dane County Humane Society)

Meet Zamu! This 22-pound cat is very friendly and enjoys curling up next to people when he’s feeling social. But when he’s had his fill, he’s content to find a favorite spot to enjoy some solo time, especially sitting perched in a window to watch the world go by. Zamu is not a fan of being carried or picked up. Are you the quiet, easygoing friend Zami is looking for?
