💰 County Enacts Hiring Freeze Amid Federal Shutdown

  • Dane County Executive Melissa Agard will propose a hiring freeze as the result of both the federal government shutdown and a $31 million deficit facing the county.
  • The freeze, which will be presented to the Dane County Board at its Oct. 23 meeting, would apply to all non-essential positions. Jobs involving public safety and frontline delivery services would be exempt.
  • Agard said the federal government shutdown has placed a “cloud of uncertainty” over the county budget process. The freeze is part of her proposed 2026 executive budget Wednesday, which totals $903.6 million, a 3% decrease from 2025.
  • 🎧 Dig deeper: The impact of the federal shutdown looms large in the Friday news roundup on the City Cast Madison podcast today. We also talk about new developments in the 2026 election, and good news for fans of Imperial Garden. Listen now! [Fox 47, Dane County, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

🏘️ Alderman: Protesters Pressured Me Over Dairy Drive Vote

  • District 8 Ald. MGR Govindarajan said he is not reconsidering his vote to close the Dairy Drive homeless encampment, and that protesters coerced him into saying he was.
  • About 25 protesters gathered outside the Sept. 30 Madison City Council meeting urging the council to reconsider its vote. They later posted a video of Govindarajan speaking with protesters after the meeting that seemed to indicate he would request a motion to reconsider the closure.
  • But Govindarjan later issued a statement saying that he was not reconsidering and felt coerced by the protesters. “I felt as long as I didn’t say the wrong thing and escalate tensions, my physical safety was not at threat, but I was deeply concerned for my privacy, my home, and those close to me,” he wrote. Where’d you go, Bernadette? Probably to watch the Puppy Bowl on TV. (Photo by AnnMarie P.)

Meet Bernadette! Rescued as a puppy who was found eating out of trash cans, she’s now quite the gourmand. Kibble? No thank you! Bernadette prefers pedigree Country Stew and whatever her people are eating, as long as it’s not asparagus. After dinner, she loves watching other dogs on TV, especially the Puppy Bowl.
