City Cast Madison
✈️ It might cost more to park at the airport soon
October 10, 2025 · — Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! A little heads up — City Cast Madison will be dark on Monday in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day. So there will be no new Madison Minutes newsletter in your inbox, and no new City Cast Madison podcast in your feed. We’ll be back bright and early on Tuesday morning. Enjoy the weekend! ☀️

What's CITY Talking About

🚧 Steer Clear of John Nolen Drive Starting Monday
- The $42 million road construction project on John Nolen Drive begins Oct. 13 and will last until summer of 2027. The project includes replacing six bridges and building three new ones, along with pedestrian and bike trail improvements.
- Traffic will be down to one lane each way, and North Shore Drive and Broom Street will also be down to one lane as those intersections are reconstructed. Starting next summer, the Capital City Bike Trail will also be closed along John Nolen Drive.
- 🎧 Dig deeper: The City Cast Madison team talks about the project on the Friday news roundup on the podcast today. We also talk about the mayor’s proposed city budget, the resignation of the independent police monitor, and goings on at UW-Madison. It’s a lot of news, and we cover all of it! ✈️ Parking Fees at Dane County Airport May Increase
- For the first time since 2008, the cost of parking at Dane County Regional Airport may rise. A county committee is considering a $4 bump at the airport, raising the daily rate of parking in the surface lot from $8 per day to $12, parking in the economy lot from $6 per day to $10, and parking in the ramp from $10 to $14 per day. The 15-minute free parking grace period would be extended to 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, the committee would also raise parking fees at the Alliant Energy Center from $8 to $10. [ 🔒 WSJ]
🐧 UW-Madison Scientists Take Final Expedition to Antarctica
- A team of UW-Madison scientists and engineers are heading to Antarctica this fall to make a final upgrade to the world’s coldest neutrino telescope, known as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
- The upgrade to the telescope, which is run by an international group of scientists, will involve drilling seven holes through 1.5 miles of ice. The telescope uses the Antarctic ice sheet to capture neutrinos, AKA the ghostly particles streaming through the cosmos.
- This will be the group’s final mission to Antarctica, due to reduced funding by the National Science Foundation and changing priorities at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, where the research is conducted. [Isthmus, IceCube]

Friday Floof

Meet Phog! He loves to make friends at the dog park by having the other dogs chase him around. (He’s faster.) He sometimes goes by the nickname “The Sheriff” because of his duties patrolling the neighborhood to keep the bunnies and squirrels in line.
