🚢 Wisconsin’s most iconic shipwrecks
January 21, 2026 · — Adrian González
Good morning, Madison! It’s producer Adrian González filling in for Rob Thomas today.
Some men have the Roman Empire, I have shipwrecks. They’re especially interesting in Wisconsin, where the Great Lakes have become the home of thousands of sunken vessels. I have the story of some such shipwrecks below ⬇️

What's CITY Talking About

🏟️ Green Light for Veterans Memorial Coliseum Renovation
- Dane County has accepted a proposal from event production company Frank Productions to upgrade the aging facility with nearly $100 million of private investment.
- The renovations will convert the coliseum into a flexible venue that can host events year-round.
- The Dane County Board will need to approve the changes once the details are hashed out. [WMTV]
🚨 Madison Police Chief Wants to Curb High-Speed Chases
- Madison Police Chief John Patterson says he wants to talk to his counterparts in other Dane County departments about curtailing high-speed chases, especially those that cross into Madison territory.
- Madison’s pursuit policy is more restrictive than other agencies such as Maple Bluff and Monona. Monona Police Department has the most police chases of any department in Dane County, and have ended with the most crashes and fatalities of any department in the last few years.

🅿️ South Park Tow-Away Zone Expanded
- As of Monday, the city has begun handing out tickets and towing drivers who park on an extended portion of South Park Street just north of Drake Street between 4 to 6 p.m.
- The expanded tow-away zone went into effect in December to help alleviate added traffic from John Nolen Drive construction, with a two-week grace period for drivers to get used to the changes without being cited. But the city began issuing formal citations and towing cars this week.
- Owners of businesses like Taj Indian Cuisine say the city gave them no warning for changes that could impact customer traffic. [🔒 Wisconsin State Journal]

Where Is It?

This sign is in the middle of Himal Chuli, which closed on State Street earlier this month after nearly 40 years in business!
🎉 Congratulations to Alexander D., Deirdre D. and Jennifer H. for being the first three people to guess correctly!

Where is this mural, called “And Still, She Blossoms” and created by a group of La Follette and Middleton High School students, located? A few clues:
- It’s on Madison’s near east side
- It’s on a building that is not open yet, but will be in March
- If you want anything from a churro to natural hair care products, this will be the place to go!
