🪧 Madison goes on strike over ICE
January 30, 2026 · — Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! It’s been a cold, cold winter, and there’s a lot of people in our community who need help. St. Vincent de Paul is hosting its annual Recycle the Warmth Blanket Drive this weekend. Bring blankets, bedding, and sheets to any St. Vinny’s location on Saturday or Sunday, and the nonprofit will distribute them to families in need throughout the year 🛏️

What's CITY Talking About

🪧 Madison Walks Out To Protest ICE Killings in Minneapolis
- Several local organizations are coming together to host an “ICE OUT” walk out and demonstration Friday (AKA today) as part of a nationwide shutdown to protest federal agents’ continued activity in the streets of Minneapolis.
- UW-Madison students will walk out of a class at 2 p.m. and hold a rally on Library Mall, and then walk down State Street for a second 3:30 p.m. rally at the Capitol. The action comes on the heels of another campus protest Tuesday in the wake of Customs and Border Protection agents killing Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last weekend.
- Several local businesses are closing or reducing their hours in support of the national shutdown, including Working Draft Brewing Company and Madison Sourdough. Meanwhile, others are staying open and donating partial profits to local and Minnesota-based relief agencies.
- 🎧 Dig deeper: On the City Cast Madison podcast, we talk about how Madison is responding to ICE’s abuses in our neighboring state. We also talk about Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin leaving UW-Madison, and a rare spat between Gov. Tony Evers and local officials. Listen in! [Instagram, Daily Cardinal, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

🖥️ Plans For a DeForest Data Center Go Offline
- A proposed QTS data center near DeForest appears to be dead. The company said in a statement that “now is not the right time” for the proposed project, after residents pushed back against the idea and DeForest village staff said the project was “not feasible.”
- As large data centers are being proposed throughout Wisconsin, Madison has put a one-year moratorium on such projects while city officials can assess their environmental and economic impact. [News 3, 🎧 City Cast Madison]
🏗️ Controversial Winnebago Street Apartment Project Stalled
- After pushback from neighboring residents, a proposed six-story apartment building near the Yahara River won’t happen for now.
- Apex Property Management wanted to build a 162-unit apartment building at the intersection of Winnebago and Merry streets. But residents said such a large project was out of character for their neighborhood and would add traffic to Merry Street, a one-block cul-de-sac.
- Meanwhile, UW-Madison plans to demolish a century-old vacant building on the west side of campus to make room for more parking. The building originally housed the Poultry Department when it was built, but has been vacant since the Sea Grant Institute moved out of it in the 1990s. [ 🔒 WSJ]
