What's CITY Talking About

🏫 La Follette School Will Get New Home Thanks to Herb Kohl
- Music Hall on the UW-Madison campus will be renamed after the late Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl after Kohl’s foundation donated $30 million to the university, the largest gift ever for the school.
- Renovations to the new building, including a new planned south wing, will support the rapid expansion of the LaFollette School of Public Affairs, which is adding an undergraduate public policy major this fall. Kohl, who died in 2023, was a longtime supporter of the school, contributing $10 million in 2019 to create undergraduate degrees at the school.
- The LaFollette School is currently spread out over 28 different locations. The revamped building is expected to open in 2029. [Daily Cardinal]
🏥 Second Case of Measles Found in Madison
- Public Health Madison & Dane County said a traveler from out of state who stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on High Crossing Boulevard on Feb. 6 later tested positive for the disease. Officials don’t believe this case is connected to the one recently reported at UW-Madison.
- PHMDC said symptoms would not surface for anyone who might have been exposed until Feb. 13 and 27. Anyone who has been vaccinated would be extremely unlikely to get measles, but unprotected individuals who may have been exposed should quarantine until Feb. 27. [PHMDC]
🐕 Warner Dog Park Closed After Pet Dies
- The off-leash dog park at Warner Park is closed until further notice after a dog who visited the park reportedly got sick and died.
- Madison Parks officials saw a social media post that the dog had died after being at the park on Friday and decided to close the park and investigate. Updates will be posted on the Madison Parks website. [WMTV, City of Madison]
🗳️ Here’s The Results of Tuesday’s Spring Primary Election
- Tuesday’s primary election in Dane County narrowed several local races down to two candidates, and proved favorable to incumbents seeking re-election. In the race for Dane County Circuit Court Branch 1, incumbent Ben Jones and challenger Huma Ahsan will advance to the April 7 general election.
- Among the three contested Dane County Board races, the race for District 12 will be between incumbent Tommy Rylander and challenger Sean Burke, who won out over Otis Harris Jr. by just 11 votes. In District 28, incumbent Michele Doolan won and will face runner-up Nathan McGree in the general election.
- And in District 15, Amy Larson (who was recently appointed to the seat) led Nino Amato by a nearly 2-1 margin. Both will advance to the general election.

After Years of Prep, The Baked Lab Is Ready To Serve

Saturday is going to be a big day for Shawn Bolduc. The former arts administrator for the Wisconsin Union Theater opened his dream project in 2019. The Baked Lab is a bakery that also offers classes for people to brush up on their skills at baking a pie or decorating a cake.
Bolduc operated out of the Madison Enterprise Center on South Baldwin Street, but always had an eye on opening a retail space of his own.
This weekend, that dream will come true as The Baked Lab opens at 2044 Atwood Ave., in a historic building that was previously home to Chinese restaurant Magic Wok. Last Friday, Bolduc hosted a sneak peek event for supporters and members of the media.
A long table was piled high with cups of pistachio butterscotch pudding, squares of everything-bagel focaccia and other tasty treats, as staff served espresso and wine. Bolduc’s vision is for the space to serve coffee and snacks during the day and elegant plated desserts with wine and beer in the evening.
The doors open at 11 a.m. Saturday. Bolduc (who was understandably mobbed by well-wishers during the open house) answered questions by e-mail afterward about the grand opening.
How did it feel last Friday night to have the doors open and having people experiencing Baked Lab after so much preparation?
Baked Lab has been a long journey. From my late teenage years I developed a love for baking and being in the kitchen. Growing the business over the last six years has been the hardest thing I've ever done and to finally get to share this space with friends, colleagues and the community is an absolute dream.
Did anything about your previous life as arts administrator at Wisconsin Union Theater prepare you for this venture, or has it been a complete departure for you?
Having worked in the theater industry since I was a teenager I've developed a lot of skills that have transferred incredibly smoothly to my career with Baked Lab. Marketing, Communications, interpersonal skills, organization, leadership, creative producing...the list is endless. Without my MFA in theater management I would be completely lost. These skills have laid the foundation for our business.

Our fair city is one of only 40 cities worldwide (and only two in the United States) to host a secret invite-only listening party Feb. 18 for his new album “Kiss All The Time. Disco Occasionally.” The reason might lie in Styles’ longtime love of the Packers – he even has the logo tattooed on his arm 🎤
