🏗️ Brutalist building faces wrecking ball

March 6, 2026 · — Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! Have you checked out City Cast’s brand-new podcast? It’s called “Your City Could Be Better!” Every week, our CEO David Plotz chats with my colleagues from across the 13 City Cast teams to talk about the weird things our cities are trying, where they’re growing, and how they’re succeeding.

I’ve really enjoyed listening to it and hearing how other cities are tackling the issues that Madison also faces, For example, this week’s episode takes us to Salt Lake City, where a national think tank wants to institutionalize unhoused people – regardless of what locals think.

“Your City Could Be Better” has also featured conversations about how the anti-ICE movement in the Twin Cities mobilized so quickly and how an unusual plan has gotten dozens of new storefronts opening quickly in downtown Pittsburgh. And our own Bianca Martin got into a spirited debate with David about the backlash against data centers in Madison!

Check the episodes out now on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

What's CITY Talking About

🪖 Commander Praises Wisconsin Troops in Middle East

  • Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, praised Wisconsin National Guard troops while discussing the United States’ war with Iran this week. Over 400 members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard are currently stationed in Kuwait and Iraq to “provide High Mobility Artillery Rocket System capabilities,” according to the Guard.
  • Caine singled out the Wisconsin National Guard troops for praise. “The integrated reserve and National Guard forces have continued to demonstrate the value of America’s reserve forces.” Gov. Tony Evers said this week that he is praying for the health, safety and return of those soldiers.
  • 🎧 Dig deeper: The City Cast Madison team talks about Wisconsin’s role in the conflict on the podcast today. In lighter news, we also run down a bunch of new restaurants that opened this week, and this summer’s Concerts on the Square lineup has some surprises! [WPR. 🎧City Cast Madison]

🏗️ Will Brutalist Building Be Saved From the Wrecking Ball?

  • Historical preservationists are trying to shield an apartment building in the 400 block of West Gilman Street from being demolished to make way for a new student apartment development.
  • The 7-story concrete building, known as Master Hall, is an example of Brutalist architecture in Madison, a 1950s trend that emphasized size and minimalist design. While some buildings on the UW-Madison campus, such as the Chazen Museum of Art and Vilas Hall, are Brutalist, they are relatively rare in Madison private housing.
  • Landmark Properties wants to demolish Master Hall and several other buildings to make way for a 16-story apartment building. But the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation argues that Master Hall deserves landmark status, which would make it harder to tear down. [Cap Times]

🚨 Plane That Took Off From Madison Crashes in Illinois

  • A Cessna T210 private airplane that left Dane County Regional Airport Wednesday night crashed in a suburb of Chicago, killing the pilot, who was the only occupant.
  • The plane was on its way to Chicago Executive Airport when it crashed into a townhouse in an unincorporated portion of Deerfield on the far north side of Chicago. Airport officials said they are cooperating fully with the federal investigation of the accident. [News 3]

🤔 What Should We Ask the Mayor?

  • Do you have any questions for Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway? City Cast Madison host Bianca Martin will be sitting down with the mayor for an interview to air on the podcast, and we’d love to know what you want us to ask her!
  • Either send us an email at [email protected] or drop us a voicemail at 608-318-3367 and let us know. Maybe you’ll hear the answer on an upcoming episode!
