🐼 The zoo’s new red panda is the cutest
August 4, 2026 · – Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! It’s been a heartbreaking couple of weeks in Madison, and the city’s interim independent police monitor, Aeiramique Glass, has been at the center of it all. Glass has subpoenaed the Madison Police Department for records related to the fatal shooting of Corey Ruiz, and she is on the City Cast Madison podcast today to talk about her investigation and systemic issues she’s seeing within the department 🚨

What's CITY Talking About

🚌 Get On the Bus at Madison’s New Regional Station
- For the first time in over 20 years, Madison will have a permanent bus station for trips to regional destinations like Milwaukee and Chicago. Currently, riders have to catch the bus outside Gordon Dining Hall at 250 N. Lake St.
- The 15-story building at 415 N. Lake St., which once was the State Street Parking Garage, is now a multi-use development known as Theory Madison. It will include a bus garage and 24-hour indoor station in addition to 213 apartments designated as student housing.
- Students will start moving into the Theory apartments this month, with the station open for operation sometime in mid-October. [Cap Times]
🐵 PETA Calls For Investigation Into Injured UW Lab Monkeys
- The animal rights group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to look into how two laboratory monkeys at UW-Madison sustained serious injuries.
- In March, a macaque injured another macaque’s arm in an adjacent cage as both were reaching for food. In April, two macaques fought after a lab worker failed to fully close the door separating their cages.
- Following the incidents, university officials told the National Institutes of Health Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare that the UW’s Primate Lab, which is federally funded, had improved safety procedures and employee training. [🔒WSJ, UW-Madison]
🧁 Asian Sweet Bakery On Park Street Closes
- Madison’s first Chinese bakery closed over the weekend on Park Street. Asian Sweet Bakery opened on Park Street in 2014 and became popular for traditional Chinese baked goods such as pork barbecue bao and red bean paste buns.
- But after baker Dai Jie decided to retire, the owners were unable to find a replacement. Customers packed the store Sunday to thank the proprietors and bought out the store’s inventory of baked goods by 11 a.m. [News 3]

Take Me Home Tuesday

Meet Otto! This 2-year-old is believed to be a German shepherd mix, and has plenty of energy to keep even the most active family on their toes. He loves to play fetch, run around, and go on hikes. He can be shy with new people and prefers to take things slowly at first.
Otto is looking for a house (not an apartment) with no small children, and a patient family who can work on his positive reinforcement training and take him on lots of fun adventures. Is that you?
