August 21, 2026 · - Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! There’s been a lot happening in Madison news this week, and we talk about it all on the City Cast Madison podcast today. From the Goodman Foundation closing down, to the UW’s big proposed tuition freeze, to Fitchburg looking for alternatives to Flock cameras, we’re getting into all of it! Tune in 🎧

What's CITY Talking About

❓ Council To Probe Officials on Willy Street: The Madison City Council will hold a special virtual session at 5 p.m. Monday to ask questions of Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, Police Chief John Patterson, and other city officials about how they responded to the Williamson Street encampment that grew out of the protests against the police shooting of Corey Ruiz. The public will not be able to comment but can observe.
- Meanwhile, the city’s Business and Economic Resources Committee is talking about creating a $300,000 fund to help businesses in the area recover from wages they lost during the 10-day period when part of Willy street was closed to traffic. [🔒WSJ, City of Madison, WKOW]
🏫 One City Schools Could Join MMSD: The Madison School Board accepted an application from One City Schools to become part of the Madison district. One City is an independent charter school outside of the district and about 80% of One City’s students live within MMSD boundaries. [Cap Times]
We propose this conversion because One City and the Madison Metropolitan School District serve the same children and share a mission, and because partnering, rather than competing or being seen to compete, better serves our scholars, families and community.
🍕 Proposed West Development Would Raze Glass Nickel: A slice of Fetalicous might be harder to come by for west side pizza lovers if a proposed development goes through. Galway Companies plans to redevelop the triangular block bounded by University Avenue, North Whitney Way, and Old Middleton Road that includes the west side Glass Nickel to build three seven-story buildings with over 500 apartments. The restaurant already plans to relocate next year. [🔒WSJ]
📚 Prominent UW Prof Resigns After Investigation: Dietram Scheufele, a well-known UW-Madison professor and expert in artificial intelligence, has resigned after an investigation concluded he violated universal policy about consensual relationships. The investigation stemmed from complaints by three female students that included allegations of sexual harassment and hostile behavior. Scheufele called the university’s findings “damaging” and “unsubstantiated.” His last day was Aug. 15 and he has since taken a job at Arizona State University. [🔒WSJ]
🎥 Lights, Camera, Wisconsin: The state’s newly reestablished film office, Film Wisconsin, announced it has given over $1 million through its new tax credit program for Wisconsin productions. Recipients include “Ueck,” a documentary about Milwaukee Brewers announcer Bob Uecker, and “The Warehouse,” a documentary about a project to complete Frank Lloyd Wright’s last unfinished building. 🖼️ Supreme Court Justices Watch Over Judge Mitchell: Dane County Circuit Court Judge Everett Mitchell commissioned a portrait of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson from Madison artist Jerry Jordan. The portrait will hang in Mitchell’s courtroom next to another painting of Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black person to serve on the nation’s highest court. [Cap Times]

📰 Extra! Extra! We had a typo in yesterday’s item about The Chowpati opening today at Madison Public Market. The name Chowpati is rooted in two words in the Marathi language "chau" and "pati," meaning “from all four directions.” Sorry about the error 😞
