City Cast Madison

🚧 Avoid these downtown streets in October

October 6, 2026 · – Rob Thomas

Good morning, Madison! It’s been a great few days if you’re a Wisconsin sports fan. The Badgers won, the Packers won, and the Milwaukee Brewers will sweep the division series if they win tonight!

We’ve got another “big game” going on this week – the City Cast Madison fall membership drive! And I have to admit, we’re kind of the underdogs right now. We still need 111 new members to sign up by Friday to reach our goal.

So this is your halftime pep talk, team! Let’s dig deep and win this thing! I know we have so many readers and listeners out there who value what City Cast Madison provides them. Like new member Erica L., who wrote to us to say, "I believe local journalism is critically necessary to our society! And I enjoy learning more about the city I live in."

If local journalism matters to you too – and you want to take advantage of all the cool benefits of becoming a member – support our work and become a City Cast Madison Neighbor today! (And, not for nothing, you’ll look extra cool cheering on your favorite team while wearing one of our new Neighbor dad hats!)

What's CITY Talking About

A blue and orange van is parked on a residential street with a table and chairs set up beside it. On the sidewalk in pink and blue chalk is the text "Combat Blindness International."

👓 Free Glasses, Eye Exams For Madison Students: The Madison school district has expanded its partnership with two nonprofits to provide free eye care through the Vision Van program. The van, sponsored by Vision to Learn and Combat Blindness International, will travel to schools to provide vision screenings, referrals for specialized care, and free glasses. [🔒WSJ]

🚨 City Still at Odds with Police Monitor over Rules: An employment report of Madison’s Interim Independent Police Monitor office by City Attorney Michael Haas’ office alleges Aeiramique Glass violated several city rules. The allegations say that Glass did not follow city rules in submitting her proposed budget, and hired outside counsel without proper authorization. [News 3]

🚧 Road Closures on Broom and Doty: Both South Broom and West Doty streets will have lanes closed this month for public utility improvements to a nearby private development. The right lane of Broom Street north of Doty Street will be closed during off-peak hours until Oct. 11. Then Doty Street will be closed to eastbound traffic from Oct. 12 to 26. [City of Madison]

🖼️ New Mural Celebrates Community Connections: A new mural by artist Amy Zaremba is on display at the Union Cab Cooperative at 2458 Pennsylvania Ave. Called “City Connections,” it's inspired by audio recordings of Madison residents telling what “connection” means to them. [WKOW]

🍂 Fall Leaf Collection Starts This Week: The city of Madison is launching the first of three fall leaf and waste pickups this week. Check the online tool to see when you should put out your waste for pickup.

⚾ Brewers in 3? After a dramatic Game 2 win, the Milwaukee Brewers are poised to win the National League Division Series tonight with a win against the San Diego Padres. (Fingers crossed!)

📱Should Alders Text Via Signal Group Chat? Some Madison City Council members have a group chat on the secure messaging app Signal, where messages can disappear after a period of time. City Attorney Michael Haas says the use is legal as long as the alders don’t discuss official council business, but freedom of information advocates say that’s hard to verify if the messages vanish.

  • 🎧 You Can Listen to Our Group Chat! On the City Cast Madison podcast today, host Bianca Martin and executive producer Hayley Sperling talk about the controversy with Rob Chappell, executive editor of Madison365, who broke the story. They also talk about the surging Brewers, and the news that Young Blood Brewing Company is exiting the Northstreet space. [Madison365, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

Meet Raider! This 1-year-old, nearly 60-pound Siberian Husky mix is a big dog with a big heart. He loves running around the yard, playing, going for walks, receiving pets, and making new friends – even dog friends. Raider is young and still working on his manners, like jumping when excited and pulling on leash.

Because of his high energy, he’s looking for a home without cats or critters where his family can continue working with him on his positive reinforcement training while spoiling him with fun adventures, treats, and love.
